If you know that your dog will react negatively in response to certain triggers, distract him until the moment is over. If your dog isn’t comfortable being around other dogs, as you walk him, keep him busy as you walk past other dogs. By doing this, you prevent your dog from making a habit of bad behavior by giving him something positive to associate with the trigger situation.
Make sure that both you and your dog enjoy the daily training. A sense of play brings you and your dog together. This bond makes the dog more responsive to your commands and training him easier. Training is fun for the dog, but you should set aside some real “play time” as well.
The important thing to understand about dog training is that it is about setting a precedence of what is expected from the relationship. The two of you will get so much more from each other once you figure this out. Do not forget to remind your dog of what he has learned. Keep his memory crisp, and do not let any deviations from acceptable behavior slide through. Once your dog gets the training basics under his collar, you will not be limited in what you can achieve together. When you get a new puppy make sure you handle him every day. This means touching him from ears to tail so he becomes used to being handled by people. This will save you headaches at vet appointments, grooming parlors, or even nail trims at home in the future since your dog will not mind being touched as much. Consistency is the key to dog training. Use certain commands with your dog, and ensure that all of your family members know and use them. Be certain that everyone understands what constitutes good behavior and what constitutes bad behavior. Make sure that responses to these behaviors are uniform. If different people are responding differently with the dog, it will make training difficult and confuse the dog.
Whenever you want your dog’s attention, use its name. You will have more control over an obedient, well-trained animal. Use his name at least 10 times each day. Avoid confusion by not calling your dog to you for punishment. If your dog suddenly starts misbehaving out of the blue, it is best to bring him to the vet so any health problems can be ruled out. Behavior such as inappropriate waste elimination may indicate an underlining health issue. At times the pet may be in so much pain that he is unable to act appropriately. This is the only way they have of showing us that something is wrong, since they are not able to tell us what’s bothering them. It is wise for all family members to be involved when it comes to training a new puppy or dog. If just one person does it, then the dog will be more inclined to only obey that one person. Having everyone do it, tells the dog that he must obey every member of the family.
Be sure you don’t carry over emotions from outside into your dog training. The dog will pick up on an upset tone of voice, and become upset {} or afraid. This prevents the dog from feeling like he did something wrong. Unless your dog has done something to deserve your unhappiness, staying positive is vital to successful training.
